After The Vanishing is the journal of 11-year-old Sticks, a da Vinci-type-genius with homemade goggles and a laboratory. The illustrations in this book are intended to be incorporated into my middle grade novel, Walby & Sticks. Sticks lives at sub-station 705, built to record and track the few humans who remain on earth. He has spent his short life watching the world around him crumble, searching for the children of the Vanishing. In this book, Sticks documents his observations, compares his findings to pages torn from the ancient manuscripts of inventors and naturalists like Robert Hooke, Maria Meriam and Leonardo da Vinci, all of whom lived centuries before the Vanishing. Sticks compares his world to this lost era, lays out his experiments and inventions, and leaves clues to the central mystery they’re are trying to solve:
Where have all the people gone?
